Mechanism of Action

How alcohol disinfects

In disinfection practice, "alcohol" refers to ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol.^[1] Both kill vegetative bacteria rapidly and are also active against mycobacteria, fungi and many viruses, but they do not destroy bacterial spores.^[1] Their activity drops sharply below 50%, and the optimum bactericidal concentration is 60% to 90% in water; alcohol mixed with water works better than pure alcohol because proteins denature faster in the presence of water.^[1]

Limits

Alcohol evaporates quickly, so contact time on a surface is short.^[1]
Alcohol is not suitable for sterilizing materials, because it lacks sporicidal action and cannot penetrate protein-rich material.^[1]
